Melissa graduated from the University of Massachusetts Lowell where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology in 2011 and her Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy in 2014. Melissa works at a hospital based outpatient rehabilitation clinic and enjoys rehabbing orthopedic and sport related injuries, in addition to adult and pediatric neurological rehabilitation.
Melissa has clinical experience with many adult neurological disorders including Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury and Parkinson’s Disease. She is certified in the LSVT BIG program and Rock Steady Boxing, both treatment programs for people with Parkinson’s Disease. Melissa’s athletic past includes field hockey and dance. She was trained in dance by SLS trainers Kathy and Melanie Coughlin for 16 years and is certified by the Dance Teacher’s Club of Boston as a dance educator. Melissa came to SLS in the fall of 2013 and immediately took interest in all of the classes, especially the boxing program. In the winter of 2014 Melissa began training with SLS boxing coach Shawn DePaul and through that has developed proficiency and competence in the skills and conditioning required for boxing.
Melissa is very excited to be bringing Rock Steady Boxing to SLS Fitness in addition to working alongside the staff of PT’s, providing members with exercise screens, injury prevention and education, and alongside Shawn in teaching boxing classes.
